VIENNA 1955 07/03/2011
What a year and a half. Heard more music in my entire life. And now I can in the later years say the same thing. We went every night to a concert, couldn't sit in a seat sometime, standing called "sta plotz". Please forgive my German spelling. It's more than sixty years when all of this happened. Ben and I rented one room in this woman's apartment, Frau Batsy. She loved having to rent the room to us because we were smoking cigarettes, especially American. We shared bathroom paper, torn up newspapers. When she went away, of course, the bathroom paper disappeared and the refrigerator was locked up. But we had the opportunity to meet many visiting musicans, especially English speaking, and the food was great. We spent 15 cents every night at a restaurant for students, but coffee cost as much as the meal. Ben had a performance of his first piano concerto with an Austrian pianist and American conductor in 1956. He then received a Fullbright grant to live in Finland. So we left Vienna in August for a new life in Finland. The Journey's Beginning ... 04/27/2011
