"Benjamin Lees' sprawling Odysseys are narrative ballades; the composer describes them as surreal. Mr. Barban argues their musical value persuasively enough. Their frequent and often violent juxtaposition of pitch and registration, together with a litany of explosive dynamics require a pianist of Mr. Barban's caliber to pull it together. Entrusted to an inferior player, the Odysseys would open up onto hazardous pianistic territory."
